BYD enjoys robust growth in plug-in business, with 80,000 units sold in October 2021

Chinese automobile manufacturer Build Your Dreams Limited (BYD) has just released its monthly sales records, which show an outstanding growth in its plug-in electric car business in October 2021. According to the China Passenger Car Association’s (CPCA’s) newly released stats, BYD managed to sell more than 80,000 units of plug-in cars during last month, enjoying a growth of 263 per cent from the same month of 2020. However, it is worth-noting here that these are wholesale shipments (China and export), not registrations or deliveries to customers.

In the previous months of June, July, August and September, the Chinese manufacturer’s shipments were recorded at 40,100 units, 50,000 units, 60,500 units and 70, 000 units respectively. The figures indicate that the manufacturer managed to raise the bar by around 10,000 units per month.

For the time being, it remains unclear how far BYD will be able to increase its sales. Even maintaining the monthly sales at 80,000 units would easily translate into nearly 1 million units per year. That would put it at par with American EV giant Tesla Motors. However, it is worth-mentioning here that Tesla sells just BEVs, while BYD sell partially electrified, PHEVs as well as all-electric cars. As per available information, BYD is accelerating the pace of its shift from ICE and PHEVs to BEVs. Plug-in cars now account for nearly 90 per cent of the company’s total car sales, which indicates that the sales of ICEs are reducing.

A breakdown of the monthly sales shows BEVs at 41,232 units (up 176 per cent year-over-year) and PHEVs at 38,771 units (up 444 per cent year-over-year). Total sales figure of 80,003 units in October represents a jump of 263 per cent from the corresponding month of last year.

Year to date (YTD), the manufacturer sold more than 410,000 units of plug-in are in China, enjoying a growth of up to 226 per cent year-over-year. Of the total sales of 410,801 units, 226,356 were BEVs, while the remaining 184,445 units were PHEVs.

Multiple BYD models set new sales records, but the top one was of course the BYD Qin+ DM (PHEV). It accounted for 17,503 units sold last month. It is now the most popular BYD plug-in car in the country with more than 78,000 units sold YTD. It was followed by the BYD Han EV (8,287), BYD Song DM PHEV (11,706), BYD Qin+ EV (8,405), and BYD Tang DM PHEV) (6,762).
