During the course of a Thursday event at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, Airbnb - the company which lets homeowners rent out rooms and homes to travelers - said that it is launching a new service called 'Airbnb Trips.' The service will enable freelance hosts in different cities to lead locally-focused excursions.
The new 'Trips' service launched by San Francisco-based Airbnb underscores an apparent move by the company to become somewhat of a travel agent, and not limit itself to home rentals alone. The company wants its service package for travelers to also include trip planning and personalized tours.
Highlighting that objective of Airbnb, the company's co-founder Brian Chesky said at the Los Angeles event that "Homes are just one small part of a great journey," and added: "We realized we needed to create a holistic experience."
In announcing the launch of the new 'Trips' service for travelers, Airbnb said that the service is initially being launched in 12 cities; with more than 50 cities to be added by the company in 2017.
The 12 cities in which Airbnb is launching the 'Trips' service are: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, London, Paris, Nairobi, Havana, Cape Town, Florence, Miami, Tokyo, and Seoul.
