Bloomberg News has disclosed in a recent report that tech titan Apple has efforts underway to develop a wearable device similar to Google Glass. The Google Glass-like device which Apple is reportedly working on would blend a standard pair of glasses with an augmented reality (AR) display.
According to the report, based on the details shared by unidentified sources familiar with the matter, a pair of digital glasses is being tested out by Apple. The glasses have the capability to connect wirelessly to an iPhone or other host system to function, just like the Apple Watch smartwatch.
However, the report has also drawn attention to the fact that since the smartglasses market is still being explored by Apple, it is not yet clear as to when the company will launch its digital glasses on the market.
Nonetheless, going by the Bloomberg's projections, the earliest time frame for Apple's unveiling of the Google Glass-like AR glasses is 2018.
Meanwhile, in reporting Apple's ongoing efforts to develop smartglasses, Bloomberg has revealed that Apple has already had talks with potential suppliers for near-eye displays and other components of the device. In addition, in the last three years, Apple has acquired a few startups -- including PrimeSense, Metaio, and Flyby -- which are focused on AR software, 3D mapping, and computer vision.
