Labtest is facing a lot of criticism from authorities and doctors around the country, and further hurting the laboratory's reputation has been the case of a 64-year-old Auckland resident whose cancer went undiagnosed in tests conducted by Labtests. While the patient is very upset, his doctor has called the incident "an incredibly unusual laboratory lapse".
The case was brought to light by GP Carmel Built who, with her medical partner Dr Ian Rapson, is currently campaigning against Labtests and urging Auckland's district health boards to hand in atleast half of the lab work to Diagnostic Medlab.
Last week, doctors from all over Auckland organized an "anti-Labtests meeting", and all but one GP agreed that Labtests was not credible and they had no confidence in it. The Aucklander, whose name has not been disclosed, was diagnosed last November with melanoma, and last month, after several surgeries, his doctor found an "abnormal" tissue via x-ray. The tissue was sent to Labtests, and the laboratory failed to find any malignancies in the cancerous tissue.
While Labtests had not made any comments regarding the case, concerned GPs have intensified their protests.
