The inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), figured by a group of inflammatory conditions of the colon and small intestine, may built a high risk of skin cancer among the patients. The major types of IBD are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
This was revealed in San Diego at an annual meet, which was conducted by the American College of Gastroenterology.
The study was conducted on patients with Crohn’s disease and also those who were affected by ulcerative colitis. Case history of 26,403 IBD patients with Crohn's disease and 26,974 with ulcerative colitis was taken from the year 1996 to 2005.
Though, certain parts of the gastrointestinal region are generally affected with any of the symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, hematochezia, weight loss, arthritis and primary sclerosing cholangitis.
“The risk appears to be linked to medications to control IBD”, says researcher Millie Long, MD, MPH, at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
''Patients on immunosuppressant medications, particularly of the thiopurine class, have an increased risk of skin cancer, greater than three times, compared to patients with IBD who do not use these medications", adds Long.
Though, there have certain previous investigation which pointed that the IBD patients are at high risks of skin cancer, but researcher of the American College of Gastroenterology claimed that the study was first of its own kind targeting on specific medications.
