In what emerged as a much controversial and hyped statement, Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society, Dr. Otis Brawley, revealed that breast and prostate cancer screening has its set of definite limitations.
A huge storm of controversy was whipped up as a result of Brawley's statement which hinted that advantages of screening in the cases of the aforementioned two cancers are sometimes overplayed.
While health experts have been warning people of the possible inaccuracy and dangers of screening in the cases of breast and prostate cancers for many years now, Brawley's statement caught much fire and fueled people's suspicions. Screening tests, according to some health experts, more often than not, give out false positives, a belief backed by Brawley's recent statement.
Many believe that the statement should not have caused such hype, as the dangers and inaccuracies of screening tests have been revealed and discussed for long. Also, experts believe that patients need to understand that in cases of breast and prostate cancer, screening itself can come as a risk. Patients, they say, need to find out more about these screening tests and risks involved with them.
