Snorkelers Go Naked to Raise Awareness about Plight of the Reef

snorkelerBold and daring snorkelers were successful in steering clear of becoming fish food during a world record endeavor at Great Barrier Reef.

The Magnetic Island world record challenge lured 23 naked snorkelers and 10 non-snorkeling nude swimmers aged between 19 and 60.

Arrangers had anticipated 100 to join in the attempt.

The incident, part of worldwide celebrations for World Oceans Day, intended to spread consciousness regarding the predicament of the reef.

Ben Schultz, General Manager of Base Backpackers, which arranged the nude snorkel at Nelly Bay beach, said that the snorkelers avoided a closeby fish feeding location where starving sergeant main reef fish were assembling.

He said that the fish get quite hungry at this time of the year. Nobody wished to become fish’s food.

Mr. Schultz said that the snorkelers were welcomed with great conditions during their 20-minute reef trip.

He said that there were blue skies and the water was not at all cold. It was just like a bath.

Mr. Schultz said that more men participated in the event compared to women.

He said, "We had eight girls all up. A married couple in their 40s drove up all the way from Mackay".

He said that nearly 250 supporters came out to view the sight.

He said, "No they weren't there for a perv, but to show their support for the environment".
