Despite the fact that the popular microblogging service Twitter is somewhat unreliable, is difficult for newbies to use, and lacks any apparent ‘grand vision’ for the future, it is remarkable that the service has grown by leaps and bounds to boast phenomenal number of dedicated users!
By far, the most remarkable achievement of Twitter is that it has been able to sustain itself so well thus far – a feat that brings along immense challenges for building a company for the long term.
However, going by the indications at Twitter’s recent ‘Chirp’ developers’ conference, the co-founders of the service, Biz Stone and Ev Williams, apparently have a clear sense of the problems and challenges that are being faced by Twitter.
Williams said at the conference that keeping up with the explosive growth of the ‘accidentally created’ Twitter service has resulted in chaos – though the company is currently the fourth largest service on the Web by some measures, it still has only 175 employees. As such, it is now hiring more workers, so as to further expand massively to handle all the looming issues in terms of service and reliability.
With both the co-founders being upfront about the reliability issues – acknowledging that fact that if Twitter has to make money, the service has ‘got to work’ -, there is reason enough for optimism about the future prospects of the service.
