Researchers have claimed that meditation could be better than tablets for relieving stress. They said meditating for half-an-hour a day avoids the need of being dependent on drugs for stress removal. Also, there are other benefits of meditation like relieving anxiety and pain.
Researchers reached at the above conclusion after conducting a research on 3,500 people, finding that meditation reduces symptoms of depression much better than conventional anti-depressants.
Mediation has a long history in Eastern traditions, but it has sought huge popularity in the West over the last 30 years.
Meditation is based on a practice of 30-40 minutes every day to accept feelings and thoughts without judging them, thereby relaxing body and mind.
Dr. Madhav Goyal is an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, and the study leader. He said there is a wrong belief among many people that meditation is only about sitting and doing nothing. “But that's not true. Meditation is an active training of the mind to increase awareness, and different meditation programs approach this in different ways”, he said.
He said that mediation is not considered part of mainstream medical therapy for anything, but it is still practiced by many for stress busting and personal growth.
