Twitter unveils new tracking tool to share tweeting locations

TwitterIn a move that will allow Twitter users to geotag tweets straight from the web, the microblogging site Thursday unveiled a new feature whereby users will have the choice to include their location along with the tweets they post on the Internet messaging service.

The new tracking tool, which be a ‘turn on-turn off feature’ will not only help add location data to the vast flow of conversations across the microblogging network, but will also enhance local discovery and search.

The introduction of the new service does not imply that all the tweets of the users will be automatically geotagged - the feature necessitates activation from the users, via a change in the settings on Twitter. com. Thereafter, they need to give their consent to share their location in Firefox; followed by their selection of the location from which they want to geotag their tweets.

Though a notable number Twitter’s almost 73 million users round the globe generally mention their location in their tweets; the specific mention of the location was largely considered a waste prized space – more so as tweets can only go up to a maximum of 140 characters.

Twitter’s decision to incorporate the tracking tool chiefly results from the increasing popularity of the ‘location sharing’ feature of other Internet services, like Loopt, Foursquare, and Gowalla – a league that even Facebook will likely join soon after Twitter.
