Couples trying to conceive were delighted with Quebec Health Minister Yves Bolduc stating that the province would fund in vitro fertility treatments for women.
Bolduc said on Thursday that up to three cycles of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments will be funded by the province by the end of the spring.
Bolduc stated that this step would help the province is saving $30 million a year which is being spent to treat premature babies born as a result of fertility treatments.
According to the plan, three embryos will be implanted in a woman’s womb during one cycle of treatment. This will avoid the number of multiple births.
In its first year, the program will cost $32 million but in the next three years, the funding will increase to $80 million.
The number of cycles being performed might go to 10,000 with the new program, government estimates stated.
