Fatal kidney disease affects many Indian kids

kidney-disease.About 80 per cent of newborns in India suffer from Acute Kidney Injury AKI, commonly known as Acute Renal Failure.

In the ICU about 30 to 50 per cent children suffer from this and five per cent of hospitalized children overall suffer from AKI.

About 75 to 350 million people across the globe suffer from Chronic Kidney disease, CKD, together with End stage renal disease, ESRD.

In India about 3, 00,000 ESRD children are there in India and out of this only about five per cent receive renal replacement therapy.

Dr Sanjeev Bagai, CEO and Consultant Pediatrician and Nephrologist, Batra Hospital, said on the eve of World Kindey Day, “Again, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) together with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) has a worldwide incidence of 350 per million population."

Kidney damage can however be treated if a functional abnormality is detected early. But tests and methods are not available now that could detect it in time.

But experts feel that novel biomarkers for early detection and management of kidney injury can be made in the near future.
