In OZ’s rural and remote areas, a 21 per cent higher mortality rate among men due to prostate cancer was seen as compared to the men in capital cities.
This information was shared with the North Queensland Register by the LNP Member for Coloundra in his parliament speech. He stated that this information needed to reach men in rural and remote Queensland.
Based the findings of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in OZ, prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed. This does not include melanoma skin cancers.
It is second highest cause of cancer fatalities among men. According to recent data, about 20,000 men in OZ in 2010 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and the death rate due to it would be 3,300 men in this year.
About 5.3 per cent increase in rate of new cases per year has been witnessed from 2000 to 2006, and increased testing might be the cause.
The relief came when it was reported that a 2.1 per cent decline was reported in the death rate from the same period of 2000 to 2006.
Men who are more than 50 years are recommended to have a check-up with their doctors.
