Australia's leading expert on Rett syndrome, David Ravine, who is chair in medical genetics at the University of Western Australia, said that the decision of judge Paul Cronin was superb and thoughtful.

About 350 girls in OZ are affected by the Rett syndrome.

Children who have Rett appear healthy at birth but starts showing signs of slowing of normal development and these indications become apparent between six and 12 months of age. Professor Ravine said sterilisation was once ordinary because girls who are disabled might be subject to abuse.
