New Super Bug in the UK

New Super Bug in the UKAs per reports, it has been revealed that vaccinating chickens against the bug C. jejuni is the simplest measure to reduce the food poisoning risk. C. jejuni has become the leading cause of death in Britain as there have been more than 371,000 cases of it in the country.

It has been said that out of 371,000 cases, more than 17,500 people have been admitted in hospital and 88 people have lost their lives. The bug is not only found in chickens, but can be found in the gut of other animals as well.

Recently, it was found that scientists at Washington State University are conducting a study on the bug. They are trying to find out the way by which hens pass the bacteria to its chicks. Lead researcher Michael Konkel, said, “We have already found that chickens injected with these specific molecules--found on the surface of Campylobacter jejuni - produce antibodies against the bacterium. This response partially protects them from colonization”.

Michael further affirmed that they have found the bacterial molecules on which antibodies attack. It is a big revelation in their study, said he. Other health experts said that it is very important to properly cook the chicken as otherwise the bug can be transmitted into human body and it can cause severe gastro-intestinal infections.

It has been further revealed that researchers from Washington State University have presented their work at the Society for General Microbiology's Spring Conference in Dublin. They have also affirmed that soon they will be working to develop a vaccine to treat the problem. Michael said that food born disease is quite a concern in the UK as it cost £2 billion each year to the government.
