Recently, the Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. conducted an experimental study over its diabetes drug, and found that the drug is effective in lowering the blood sugar levels. Moreover, the drug also has fewer side effects as compared to other drugs.
The drug was tested over 426 voluntary patients who have been suffering from type 2 diabetes. During the experiment, it was found that the drug was capable of reducing the blood sugar levels by 48% in just 12 weeks of consumption.
The findings of the experiment have been published in the medical journal called The Lancet. Besides, the findings were also presented at the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting held in San Diego.
The drug, TAK-875, would now go through the final phase of trial. If the drug passes the final stage of trial, then it would be made available for clinical use. Type 2 diabetes is a lethal disease which kills the patients slowly.
With the increased cases of obesity, the cases of Type 2 diabetes have also increased manifolds. Therefore, it has become necessary to find an effective care of it. It has been informed that during the recent trial, few of the patients suffered hypoglycemia, a situation where the body's sugar level drops significantly.
Dr. Minisha Sood, of Lenox Hill Hospital, said: "Though this study includes a small sample size followed for a short period of time, the results are promising in that TAK-875 appears to be effective for glycemic [blood sugar] control without significant risk for hypoglycemia or weight gain".
Further research to gauge the efficiency of the drug has been called for so that the safety of people can be ensured. It is hoped that the drug, in the coming time, would bring a revolution in the field of medical science.
