Komen’s Senior Leader Resigns Due to Policy Change

Komen’s Senior Leader Resigns Due to Policy ChangeA new report has revealed that the Komen foundation, a widely known breast cancer advocacy organization, which supported Planned Parenthood affiliates with breast cancer screening funds, has decided to resume its service.

According to the report, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation had been known for providing financial support to the Planned Parenthood’s affiliates for breast cancer screenings. But, Karen Handel, who is a former Republican candidate for governor in Georgia, had influenced the foundation’s board to change their policy of financial support to low-income women for mammograms.

It is being said that the organization had stopped funding the Planned Parenthood affiliates since past one year. Also, it was criticized on the grounds of its decision of cutting the contributions to affiliates of Planned Parenthood. Thus, finding it as a solution to calm the public’s criticism, the Komen establishment decided to continue its service of support for breast cancer screenings.

The report says that Ms. Handel, one of the senior leaders of the organization, was not satisfied with the foundation’s decision of resuming the service. Thus, she resigned from her post on Tuesday, just a few days after restoration of Planned Parenthood’s eligibility for grants on Friday.

Ms. Handel had penned in her resignation letter to the chief executive Nancy G. Brinker of Komen that she was completely unhappy with the portrayal of the fact that she was the only one to chauffeur the decision of eliminating finance service to Planned Parenthood. Also, she claims that she agrees her involvement in the matter and still believes that their decision to cut was the best.

However, Ms. Brinker added “We have made mistakes in how we have handled recent decisions and take full accountability for what has resulted, but we cannot take our eye off the ball when it comes to our mission”.
