Doctors have issued a new warning that baby boys who are conceived using the new and sophisticated IVF method might end up inheriting infertility problems from their fathers.
It is already a well known fact that men whose ring finger and index finger are of the same size are mostly likely to end up with a fertility problem, as compared to those men who have longer ring fingers.
Now, a new research has suggested that boys who are conceived using a new technique of reproduction, called intracytoplasmic sperm injection, wherein a single sperm is injected directly into the egg instead of many sperms being mixed together with a single egg, might end up facing the same infertility issue.
"This is the first study of this kind on these children. We don’t yet know the implication of the findings because the children are very young, but we need to inform people [about the possible risks of the ICSI procedure]", said Lead author Alastair Sutclife, a pediatrician at the Institute of Child Health.
Experts are now stressing that the aforementioned reproduction technique should only be used when absolutely necessary.
