It seems like Wal-Mart is all set to make its presence felt in District as it has been confirmed that it will open six stores there. With this decision, the giant retailer would be able to expand its reach till east of the Anacostia River, which has been in news for insufficient job opportunities.
So far, the Arkansas-based company has made its mark in rural and suburban areas but recently, it has started venturing into urban segment. With the news hitting the contours of the community, voices are being heard that labor unions and activists are all set to oppose the move of the retail giant.
There was another announcement from the company to open stores at a former car dealership on Georgia Avenue NW in Ward 4, at East Capitol and 58th streets in Ward 7, at New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road NE in Ward 5. Even the company is making aggressive plans to develop its infrastructure in Tysons Corner, Rockville, Aspen Hill and Oxon Hill.
About the insufficient wages, Wal-Mart spokesman Steven Restivo assured that nearly 1,800 jobs would be created by their venture and would provide access to all the best possible things to those who have been struggling to get hold of retail shops earlier.
“What we’ve said all along is that our wages and benefits are as good, if not better, than the majority of businesses we would compete with that are currently doing business in D. C. — union or not union”, said Restivo, who is of the opinion that the company has lot to offer to the people here.
Though no community benefits agreement has been signed with the company, Mackenzie Baris, lead organizer for DC Jobs With Justice, has assured that all possible steps would be taken to ensure the best for the people of the region.
