Vitamin D good for reducing fall injuries

australiaAdministering Vitamin D to the elderly every day could cut their chances of getting an injury by falling down, which was more in nursing homes. A new research found that due to old people staying indoors at nursing homes they were not getting enough Vitamin D due to which their bones were weak.

The review, by the Cochrane Library, notes people staying indoors were more likely to get injuries like fractures etc. there were 10 times more chances of getting a hip fracture at nursing homes which could prove fatal also.

Many nursing homes to reduce fall risks were using ‘multifactorial interventions, also known as fall-prevention programs consisting of exercise, medication, and environmental changes, such as eliminating tripping hazards.

The Cochrane researchers reviewed 5,095 old people in nursing homes. They were given vitamin D supplements on a regular basis.

A 28 per cent decrease in fall injuries was found among those who were given the vitamin.

"In our review, we saw limited evidence that these combined interventions work, but we could more confidently recommend them if they were delivered by a multidisciplinary team," said lead researcher Ian Cameron, who is based at Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney in Ryde, Australia.

The findings are published in the Cochrane Review.
