A report by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revealed that Taiwan food is contaminated with DEHP, which can be hazardous for health. DEHP has been banned by the government as it is potentially harmful. DEHP is normally used in the manufacturing of articles like intravenous bags and tubings, blood bags and infusion tubings and nasogastric tubes.
After the reports of DEHP in the food products of Taiwan, the FDA has begun to monitor high-risk products from Taiwan like sports drinks, fruit juices and soft drinks to ensure that they are safe for customers.
FDA head, Suzette Lazo said that low doses of DEHP are generally safe and high doses or prolonged exposure can have harmful effects. She warned that high doses of DEHP in children could lead to testicular defects, fertility problems and toxicity to kidneys.
Philippines’ food products are also under scrutiny as Taiwan’s Department of Health confirmed that DEHP was imported by the company from Philippines.
In Taiwan, 47 manufactures have been caught for adding DEHP in their food products and were made to recall their products from the market. FDA has asked various other manufactures to send their products for test to prove that they are free from the harmful chemical.
