In a new survey it was found that although the fresh guidelines were issued by the government to regulate the usage of tan beds, many of the New Zealand youth are still turning a blind eye to the perils posed by them.
A study that recruited around 1000 members of Cross Health Society, found that out of 33% people aged between 21 and 29 who used sunbed, 3% were the regulars while no less than 27% would like to go for it again.
Moreover, 36% of the members in the age bracket of 30 and 54 had used sunbed in the past, while 14% would consider using it again in the near future.
It was further revealed that the no less than 89% of people aged between 21 and 29 accounted being sunburnt last year while 73% of those aged 30 to 54 reported the same. In fact, no less than 27% people aged above 65 were sunburnt, compared to 49% for those aged 55 and 64.
These findings clearly indicate the menace created by tan beds do not target a specific genre but affect the people of all age groups.
Dr. Ian McPherson, the Chief Executive of Southern Cross Healthcare Group, stated that either the people are not aware of the hazards or are just ignoring the facts, which is not good in the either of the cases.
He further added that Melanoma, a strain of an aggressive cancer dangerous to all has seen a sharp rise with no less than 75%, all thanks to the growing trend of using commercial tan beds for cosmetic tans.
