A very sweet gift has been sent to Queenslanders from Sri Lanka. Well, according to officials, the island nation has sent a donation of tea to Australia in order to bring some cheer to the flood victims holed up in Queensland.
The gesture has been made despite the fact that Sri Lanka is also reeling under floods and has witnessed the death of nine people because of the natural calamity. Tea has been gifted to Australia as a gesture of thanksgiving for helping Sri Lanka during the 2004 tsunami disaster that had struck the tropical nation.
The donation will help in brewing an estimated a quarter million cups of tea for the 200,000 people, who have suffered due to floods.
The ceremony of the donation was carried out in the office of MEA on the 10th of January, where Sri Lankan Minister G. L. Peiris gave the package to the Acting High Commissioner of Australia, Sophia McIntyre. Mr. Peiris informed that the gesture was particularly important as Australia had helped them in troubled times.
Secretary for the External Affairs Ministry of Sri Lanka and the Director of Dilmah, Mr. Dilhan Fernando, were also present during the ceremony.
The new development signifies the friendly relations between the two island nations and is definitely a step ahead in the right direction for both the countries.
