Under the new healthcare plan, which has been revamped to enable it to reach millions of more Americans, the Senate is looking to levy a tax on some cosmetic surgery procedures, and the plastic surgeons do not seem to be taking the news well as there are good chances that an added tax might reduce the number of people going in for cosmetic surgery greatly. Under the proposal, the 5% tax would be levied on everyone going in for procedures ranging from face-lifts to teeth whitening.
For now, the new proposed tax is being called the "Botax", and it could raise as much as $6 Billion every year. Experts, however, are not very supportive of it, as they feel that it is based on the myth that only wealthy women go in for cosmetic surgery, and while there might be some truth to the belief, it is not entirely true. Phil Haeck, president-elect of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, has asserted that majority of women who nowadays receive corrective cosmetic surgery have earnings between $30,000 and $90,000.
Under the new tax-plan, Botox injections would be hit the hardest. The skin-smoothing shots sell like hot cakes, and last year, there were nearly 4.7 million treatments recorded, with an average cost of $400 per visit. Some botox treatments require several injections.
"It is a random hit on an easy target that is only punitive and not corrective", said Caroline Van Hove, a spokeswoman for Allergan Inc., the maker of Botox Cosmetic. "The bottom line is that taxing cosmetic procedures is unnecessarily punitive on people who have merely decided to enhance their appearance".
For the new healthcare bill, the Government will be requiring funds worth a whopping $1 Trillion, and while many have cheered the plan, there are many others who have been very critical of the fact that for the required funds, the authorities are trying to cut corners and raise money via irking mediums.
