The British Heart Foundation has recently shared that Scottish parents are under huge misconceptions when it comes to their children's fitness levels and the amount of exercise they should undertake. While 71% of the parents who participated in the poll believed that their kids were "active enough", only 10% of the children actually said they were undertaking the required amount of daily activity.
The charity, which based its findings on a major interview of nearly 1,000 UK parents with children aged between 8 and 15 years, asserted that parents need to "take the blinkers off" regarding how active their kids are in order to keep them away from obesity. But some experts have shared concerns that there are various barriers to an increased activity level.
"Mums and dads need to take the blinkers off about how active kids need to be in order to keep their hearts healthy. Kids need to get moving more, yet we've been standing still for the last decade. Children aren't really any more active than they were 10 years ago", said Associate Medical Director at the BHF, Dr. Mike Knapton.
The BHF has asserted that quick measures are now needed to ensure that children indulge in more activity. Increased provisions to youth clubs, open space and cycle paths has been one way shared by the charity, which believes that the Scottish Government should look into the matter more seriously.
